What is an eight-part chorale?

Simply put, an eight-part chorale is a vocal ensemble with eight parts paired off over four distinct vocal ranges. This composition of vocal parts is also known by the initialism SSAATTBB. Here’s what the letters stand for:

  • Soprano: The highest vocal range (Soprano I and Soprano II).
  • Alto: The second-highest vocal range (Alto I and Alto II).
  • Tenor: The third-highest vocal range (Tenor I and Tenor II).
  • Bass: The lowest vocal range (often divided into Bass and Baritone).

You don’t have to know what an eight-part chorale is to know you enjoy singing, though. If you are thinking about joining our choral group or just curious about what we do, visit our Membership page. Remember: Auditions are not required – just a love of entertaining and giving!
